Food Crisis vs. Alternative Sources of Nutrients
*
While the food crisis is getting heavy worldwide and contributes to unleash mass protests in Middle East, North Africa and India , it is worth reminding how many botanic species might be a good source of nutrients.
Very often humans (mainly those living in urban areas) have lost knowledge about the natural world and common diets are dictated by the food companies commercial interests. The beautiful book by Raj Patel should be a must in your library. As a consequence nutrients diversification shrinks and just a few main staple foods, markedly rice, maize and wheat, provide most of the energy intake. In USA and Europe, animal products are even ahead of cereals as for their energy contribution to the average diet hence causing further problems in terms of environment and health.
There is a need to increase and spread knowledge of the richness of edible plants which can be found throughout the world. In this regard I want to mention a great piece of work done by Prof. Dr. Eduardo Rapoport, Universidad Nacional del Camohue (Argentina), in order to identify invasive species in South America which turn out to be edible.
The following video reports on this programme...enjoy and eat well !
Avoid supermarkets, remember that processed food is often poisonous and prepare your own food starting from healthy ingredients ...

Libya, Oil and Models of Development and
* These days I happened to pick up some pieces of those typical conversations that reveal the mood of the populace: it seems that many Italians are worried about the situation in Libya because it could come waves of desperate people seeking refuge in Italy. The individual-mass is not concerned about the Libyan tragedy in itself but the consequences that such events might have on his daily life. Of course, these layers are composed of common people as good Catholics, baptized and consistent, that love il prossimo loro, dunque anche l'eventuale immigrato libico, come sé stessi .
Se però the dictator is on the brink of the abyss then you can begin to criticize. The hypocrisy of politicians is a reflection of the hypocrisy of the people.
I noticed how often the Italian populace knows little or nothing of the crimes made decades ago by other good Italians in Libya.
other hand there are political ideals that people know all of those crimes and that, therefore, have always considered the Libyan Colonel a folk hero and anti-imperialist. See the next insipid interview with one of the founders of the Manifesto and demonstrates how the ideological infatuation can blind. Make an impression while reading those sentences in Libya is an ongoing massacre.
Among other things, for the purposes of the issues addressed in this blog, it is interesting to the Closing dell'ottantenne revolutionary proposal: "Italy should build the coastal highway between Tunisia and Egypt"!
Mr. Valentino course offers a 'highway that, if achieved, will be for decades traveled by vehicles powered by hydrocarbons, and that is because of that oil on which the perverse relationship of friendship between Italy and Libya. In fact, many have learned in these days that Italy imports from Libya about a quarter of their oil (26% in 2009) and that, despite Libya is now among the world's largest producers of crude , it has the largest reserves found in Africa.
Now it is' clear that ENI will continue to extract oil in Libya and Libyan leaders, old and new, will continue to base their power over the oil fields until exhaustion.
But what is worrying is how even the pseudo-revolutionaries or those unable to see beyond the tip of their nose and thinking patterns of development radically different alternative to those now dying based on fossil fuels. It 'just a matter of culture!
Moreover, the highway is always a functional element in tandem oil industry - automotive industry beam that forms the backbone of the global capitalist system. It is not understood as a revolutionary, anti-historical, then it can be champion of highways. Even if you want to take the views of the elderly ladies, the contradiction is so obvious to him ridiculous. These have always been friendly talkative intellettualini.
I would never think to bring along a highway that North African coast which is already highly populated and often raped by mass tourism. I would be spontaneous propose to (hopefully new) Arab ruling classes to build a bike path in the context of tourism development that enhances the smart small local economies of the Mediterranean coast, from Morocco to Egypt.
It 'obvious that neither I nor Mr. Valentine will have no say. I write these things just to define a concept of development (it was post-petroleum) and ways of life which, I believe, sooner or later have spread to Africa as it already has spread to parts of Europe.
Among the many who read these posts are already many agree with me, therefore, generally live well.
And maybe even that pale individual mass-hour, locked in car or office, outside their fears in the face of possible waves of immigrants a day will understand how good is cycling for work and on holiday, will decide to leave the womb protected, to give up some spaghetti and try to get to know different worlds from the village he was born. In doing so stop being afraid of immigrants, it abbronzerà a bit and help reduce national dependence on oil imports.

What Is The Bugle Sound On Base
Forests IGAPE Várzea .... color of the water and endemic birds
*
Dear Prof. Vittorio Amadio,
With reference to the article published in The New Ecology of February 2011 (pg.35), noted that the distinction she made between the forest and forest IGAPE Várzea is a little confused. I would like to point out that:
a) the forest IGAPE is regularly flooded with water from rivers that originate from dark areas geologically oldest (see Rio Negro basin in the Amazon)
b) Várzea forest is seasonally flooded with water from rivers white (actually beige color ) from the territories, such as the Andes, geologically younger (see Rio Solimões).
The distinction of color of water is essential, as the second, in virtue of the territory from which they originate, are the most rich sediments eroded. Consequently, the forest soil Várzea has a relatively rich in nutrients and is more favorable to agriculture. So is the most threatened by logging practices.
Conversely IGAPE forests generally have few mosquitoes because the larvae can not bear the organic acids that make just dark water.
The same difference in water color that is known in the Amazon basin found in the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela: Puerto Ordaz in the vicinity of the Caroni River, which originates in the Gran Sabana and is a carrier of sewage, flows into the Orinoco, but in fact the waters of different density and temperature, do not mix for a long stretch ... just like in Manaus.
At first glance, also known error: ' Hoatzin is not endemic to Amazonia. If it would mean an endemic species found only there. But I also saw this interesting bird in the Orinoco delta thus out of the Amazonian region. You can instead define endemic to South America .
Overall, the article seems to me without infamy and without praise, not bad but does not say anything of relevance and original sull'Amazonia. New label, will be asked to fill a page the magazine and she did a little online diligently collecting data. I'd give a nice 22/30. I fear that it lacks direct experience with that part of the world, who knows if there's ever been true even in the forest not as a group. The
am attaching a few pictures on the phenomenon of water that "do not mix." Best regards
Marco Zoli
ps Do not worry. His is not an isolated case: one knows how many times I happened to pick up The New Ecology and find errors of various kinds! It 's an old story ... and the Director is an old friend! Very honest, however: has never organized a scam in his life .

Montepulciano: PDL CALLS FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE MARTYRS Cave. 14/02/2011 CC
“Crediamo nel ricordo e nella giornata ad esso dedicata dalla legge Nazionale ed é proprio per questo che riteniamo assolutamente indispensabile non dimenticare – introduce la consigliera Valentina Ciolfi – quindi chiediamo a questo consesso un minuto di silenzio in ricordo dei Martiri delle Foibe e l'impegno pubblico all'intitolazione a street or a square, reserving as a political group to present a well-detailed technical department, we believe it is important that the City Council should help to maintain this sad page in the history of Italy must remain in the memory collective to prevent replication and safeguard future generations. " At the minute's silence did not participate in the Counselor of the PRC Communist. "I remain baffled - says Councillor - when I see a Councillor to leave the classroom because they do not want to remember, this is not the message that must pass between our young people, there is no political color in memory, the memory is just - concluded Ciolfi - Which is to serve not to repeat what has been done in the past and similar behavior is not acceptable in a Western democracy as ours, is symptomatic of cultural and political stupidity. INTERVENTION BUDGET 2011
study we did today on the budget and spending all the rhetoric from this administration leaves us a bit 'disconcerting if we consider the perspective of what is actually written in your relationships and in the numbers of the budget.
As always, the Administration Municipal favored where he should not forget about what we do not secdondo is important, but fundamental for a country in step with the times and competitive, but then it is more important to attack the government and seek to demonstrate through the diabolical probatio Berlusconi government did not understand anything and that has addressed the crisis in unjust and inappropriate, even if we know that it is not, but with this Administration Region and the province is losing control over the system of power that set up so far and that at this moment, therefore, has something else to think rather than invest resources in the best way for its citizens!
see that the Administration is committed alleggirire to the TIA when we know that in reality it's all smoke and mirrors because the band of interest is negligible at least makes us think, in fact very difficult times in this group was right on the TIA Board had embarked on a great battle from which no was able to answer, because it was probably too ambitious and not a battle in the logic of this administration, the TIA is in fact a tax and we all know that with the Constitutional Court Judgement 238/2009 adopted TIA tribute, then for the prohibition of double taxation should be returned to the people of VAT paid on the TIA, but our municipality has not even considered our proposal e si è liberato del problema dicendo solo che era ancora difficile esperire le modalità en che doveva pensarci il governo a sbrogliare la matassa, perchè il problema era anche quello inverso delle imprese, non era llora forse meglio cercare di risolvere e dare una risposta concreta ai cittadini?
E' tuttavia apprezzabile l'intervento che vede costretta l'Amministrazione comunale a dover tornare sui propri passi facendo rientrare nella macchina organizzativa comunale servizi che prima erano appaltati or outsourced, the ultimate good demonstration of the fact that when we speak we also have a brain and maybe we can be right!
We are in full harmony with the operations on the environment and renewable energy, we believe that they can give a major boost to the recovery of this territory.
They let us instead stunned the statements that are made on the staff, leave us speechless and in particular the statement "The administration at the end of 2010, in anticipation of the hiring freeze has made the courageous and important to bring the maximum allowed staffing Ente, it seems that the Administration wanted to take even if staff it was not necessary, I think this is a brave choice, is indeed quite the opposite, in fact, the hiring freeze is used to cope with a crisis in which we all have to rationalize, but in this town thinks you always with the old logic power who want to bring up what it really is not. We can not afford to do whatever we want, we can no longer afford to make fun of, it is the Public Administration must set a good example, but here it is the Administration that puts together sentences that seem not only want to completely disregard the directions of the Central Government, but also make fun of the next one!
La politica che state continuando a portare avanti è quella della vendita di immobili, invece che quella della razionalizzazione, but where to go from here? Sell A Piazza Grande?
While the Administration is committed to ensuring a better living no trace can be seen, if not ridiculous, sanitation interventions (namely the open sewers) and running water where it still does not arrive, I referring to the motion tabled by my group on the main route of public Nottola, we can not, in fact, define a civilized country livable, not a country that in 2011 guarantees all citizens the water retention of black and white and running water in home.
continue to see in 2011 is expected to Acquaviva intervention DI8 upgrading and renovation of Cocconi, however the building Cocconi takes its name from the man who won by inheritance to our local administration, the Cocconi had also expressed in his will, as a last will, the desire that this building was in each case for the use of children country, but this once again, Administrative cares and really wants to use it as he wishes! We do not agree and continue to fight because it does not, and commits us to challenge any arbitrary decision before the competent fora.
The implementation of public toilets in the cemetery of liquor and finally a small gesture designed to civilization, could no longer see a cemetery does not have the main services, however, once again non vediamo nessun intervento per la recinzione del cimetero, non si può vedere più un cimitero recintato come un pollaio, i nostri morti hanno bisogno di una degna sepoltura, è basilare in una civiltà e questo davvero non possiamo accettarlo.
Ci lascia ancora basiti il vedere l'amministrazione comunale, che nonostante un consiglio comunale aperto dibattuto, nonostante i nostri interventi e nonostante la palese situazione della Fondazione Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte continua a ritenerla come una delle associazioni più produttive del territorio, ma soprattutto continua ad elargire denaro in maniera spropositata, infatti tra gli interventi del capoluogo è prevista la messa a norma del Teatro Poliziano, ma forse vi è sfuggito that you have kindly donated in usufruct to the Foundation for thirty long years?
Ben is instead in the intervention and the Civic Center Gracciano and work on the school station.
As for the school I want to remind this administration that the school building for kindergarten, elementary and middle belongs exclusively to the City, however if so where is the action to the heating of the schools of Montepulciano which was promised parents of pupils? In fact not many know that the boys middle school in Montepulciano, thanks to our Directors, are spending a winter frost, and our commissioner had promised the parents of pupils this summer would be restored, because this year they were forced, in contravention of any legislation sull'anticendio and safety in the workplace, to bring an electric heater for the class to make at least livable environment during the colder months, but d 'Moreover, we are accustomed to so many fine words and a few facts then we should not amaze!
Besides the design of the school Sant'Albino is a good project that certainly makes it shine in our territory, but since we are forced acre school and two poles that we have to do two presidencies, we renew once again our proposal to create a two-pole to the south and a school north of the territory, also because our structures need a considerable maintenance and thus it would be certainly more constructive and more rational to create two multi-purpose centers to ensure better service!
are certainly positive relationships with the cultural facilities undertaken, but there is absolutely no use to the University of Siena, our university, in fact, is experiencing a period of great economic difficulties and we all know, so it can not afford to keep detached structures involving expenditures of irrepressible energy and resources and the relationship with our City is certainly one of them.
As for the culture if our government with its cuts upsets your system, well to say that it seems almost utopian talk about the good performance of the system Montepulciano, as I had several opportunities to say, this cultural system is now linked to the logics of party and power that are not and can not be shared by my group, n we can not afford at this time of world crisis to keep your logic, we are not against culture, but we want a culture productive and useful, not a culture focused on a cart of votes, the much-vaunted site in this report, it actually has a hole of more than € 250,000 which Administration still has not been able neither to justify nor spieagare and we can see that our resources are still devoted to charity as illegal financing of your party! In
nostron territory associations abound, but this administration continues to subsidize always the same, just because, moreover, not all lead to "culture" of the party hoped for!
The creation of a farm museum is an ambitious project but first, I think, must have the consent of the owners of Leopold, which I am not including the City there, then it must be carefully studied and considered, otherwise it will end up hand in hand with the lake!
Maybe even better than the resources invested in the culture would lead to a greater return on the territory, but I realize that this is impossible for an administration that has to hold up his powers!

Chest Infection I Fly In 2 Weeks
North Africa and Islamic countries, popular uprisings and food prices
*
It was also difficult to pick up the signals and I was wondering how much time the populations of Arab countries and Iran could bear to remain subdued. I just explained to Frederick that the Arabs of Israel had, after all, living conditions far better than their peers living in neighboring Arab countries.
From Tunisia to Egypt and Iran new social strata most educated and dynamic demand an end to corrupt dictatorships nepotistic but there is no doubt that the discontent of the masses that we see in recent weeks comes from further deterioration economic conditions. The mass protest evil because he lives and often hungry. Yet the
' FAO observatory which monitors the price indices of food revealed by six months record increases especially for sugar, oils and grains.
In fact, the world cereal production in 2010 was not bad and has declined only globally 's 1.4% over the previous year. The developing countries have increased production which almost offset the decrease in developed countries. The problem is that global demand continues to grow, generating expectations of reduced stocks, therefore, strong price increases. Floods and drought in Australia in Argentina create further instability in the markets so much so that in December 2010 the price of wheat exports from USA reached U.S. $ 324 per tonne, 70% more than in July.
77 countries worldwide are classified as low-income food-deficit (Low Income Food Deficit Countries, LIFDC). Overall, in 2010, these 77 have increased by 2.5% cereal production compared to 2009. If you outsource the data you see in North Africa, however, that production has fallen by 10%, an important fact. In addition, increased production capacity not LIFDC frees countries from the need to continue to import and, as prices rise, their trade balance worsens.
Continuing to read the FAO report is known in Tunisia as grain production has fallen by 46% compared to 2009 e del 35% rispetto alla media dei 5 anni precedenti.
Even in the generally peaceful and prosperous Oman there was some protest, but you really must go and find traces in the international press. In this interesting country, with a low population density and a history of the Sultanate of attention to environmental issues, we see conflicts that disrupt neighboring Arab states. Maybe this means something ... maybe then I get proven wrong tomorrow morning.

Researchers and Research Radio3Scienza
*
Radio3 program that deals with the themes of science is devoting the month of February specific issues of research in Italy. The researchers were asked to briefly describe their experience. I find this initiative interesting and sparkling, so I attended. Here is my contribution .
************************************************ ********************************
Care and dear to Radio3Scienza,
often listen to your interesting programs, and so there I write about the issue relating to Research and Researchers.
are a number of years a researcher at the Department of Physics, now School of Science and Technology, 'University of Camerino. I find that the job of researcher is extraordinarily beautiful and would do everything I did. I worked at the Departments of Physics 5 (to stay in Italy) and I can say that wherever the level of scientific research is high, often highest, international value. About the mechanisms of recruitment of researchers and, more generally, to systems internal promotion, I've never seen the particular injustices occur nor favoritism whatsoever. Departments of Physics merit is rewarded while the procedure of the competitions is itself hypocritical and unnecessary energy-consuming because the winner is predetermined.
I am also aware that the area of physics is (on average) an exception in the panorama of the Italian university.
Non conosco infatti alcun professor who has a quality of life comparable to mine. I have never worked to make money (in fact they refused) but to avoid wasting time in idle chatter and the full potential offered by this profession, I soon reached a standard of daily life that I would not change with that of any other. I live in one of the most beautiful in the world and work from home taking full advantage of the opportunities of the great technological revolution that we are fortunate to experience. I think devas be very sad having to put in a metal box in the morning and burn fuel to go to work. I've never been part of groups and already published by a student only. They are in great shape.
I believe that the researcher devas do not only research and teaching. And in fact I do not do it for many years ... fifteen years ago the teaching experience was helpful then I realized that I did not bring in and stopped. Without free expression and climb on roofs. Instead I climbed on the roof of my house for insulation and become independent from fossil fuels. They live better and you do not even wasting money.
I know that in Italy the culture is not a value and that the research is poorly supported. I also believe that the Italian researchers, rather than aspire to a career in the service of their copings, should have been and still should seize the great opportunities insite nel loro mestiere e valorizzare una figura professionale forse unica nel panorama mondiale. Almeno fino all'avvento di quest'ultima pessima riforma.

Good, Funny News from Malawi
*
It is well known that bovine and sheep methane emissions do contribute to global warming. This effect is very much relevant also in view of the fact that the methane warming power is about twenty times as much as carbon dioxide (per unit of weight).
In this regard also human flatulence should be considered although the methane content in the latter may be less than that due to cattle.
A few weeks ago I met in Zanzibar a former militant of an Italian extreme left-wing group active in the seventies of the last century. As we had an interesting talk I felt bound to dedicate him a post . Federico had settled in Dar es Salaam since a couple of months following his wife employed at a Dar based UN agency. Federico had previously found himself close to the Malawi border and the same had just happened to me (Tanzania and Malawi share a border amid the beautiful Lake Nyasa). In fact the coherent guy did not cross the border as he was frightened by the idea of being in Malawi. On the spur I did not grasp why although, later on, talking about food I got that beans were main staple in his diet.
I am also fond of legumes but, upon cooking them, I try to remember to add some crumbs of Asafoetida , a marvelous gum which I got in plenty years ago at a remote farmer market in Northern India. Still I have it in stock also because, to Graci's dismay, I sometimes forget to add it. Even in this cases however I remain far away from the steady and powerful Federico's performances.
The latest news from Malawi explains and justifies Federico's fear. The country is about to reintroduce a law which bans public farting . A hazard to Federico. "Any person who vitiates the atmosphere...shall be guilty of a misdemeanour."
I wonder whether the Malawian Justice Minister is motivated by environmental awareness but certainly he is setting a good example. And he knows how to hit the headlines.
